Maple Facts:

The sap has been running this weekend!  We have had cold nights and warm days.

Did you know:It is sometimes hard to identify a maple tree in the winter.  If you are looking for maple trees in your backyard, here are a few tips:

  • The bark of sugar maple trees changes color as it ages. The bark of younger trees will be grayish-brown in color. As the sugar maple trees mature, the bark will deepen to a dark brown. It is characterized by vertical grooves that are closely spaced.

  • Mature sugar maple trees may appear “shaggy” from a distance, due to the exaggerated peeling plates of bark that the trees develop.

  • Maple trees have opposite branching. Two types of branching occur in trees and shrubs: alternate branching and opposite branching. With alternate branching, the side branches are staggered and alternate throughout the branch. On the other hand, the side branches that grow directly opposite of each other in trees and shrubs are considered opposite branching. There are far fewer trees with opposite branching, than those with alternate branching, so this can be a big clue to the identity of the tree if you're trying to figure out what kind it is.

See you in March!
